Broom races + upgrade path

How to get a broom, how races work, and the upgrade path that matters.

Broom races + upgrade path

Flight is unlocked early — but the broom you get has terrible base stats. Upgrading matters more than it seems.

Get your broom

  1. Complete Flying Class main quest (Madam Kogawa).
  2. Visit Spintwitches Sporting Needs in Hogsmeade.
  3. Buy any broom — they're all stat-equivalent at base. Cosmetic only.

Upgrade the broom (do this!)

  • Spintwitches sells 4 tier-1 upgrades for 600 galleons total. Buy them.
  • After completing Flight Test mini-quest, you unlock 2 more upgrades at Albie Weekes (Spintwitches owner).
  • Tier-3 upgrade unlocks after winning 3 of the broom races.

Broom races

  • 5 race instances scattered across the Highlands. Marker icons on the map.
  • Each race: complete all 3 difficulty laps (bronze/silver/gold).
  • Rewards: broom upgrade unlocks + cosmetic broom paints.

Final tier — Onyx Hellfire (best broom)

  • The fastest broom in the game.
  • Locked behind: post-game purchase at Spintwitches.
  • Costs 3,500 galleons.

Compared to Hippogriff

  • Highwing (Hippogriff) is faster than tier-1 brooms but slower than fully upgraded broom.
  • Use the Hippogriff for short trips. Use upgraded broom for long-distance.

If stuck: if your broom feels glitchy in turns, you have a controller deadzone issue specific to the post-2024 patch. Adjust the flight sensitivity in settings — it's separate from movement sensitivity.
