How to find the Phoenix (rare beast)

The Phoenix is the rarest beast in the game and locked behind a postgame side quest. Plus the rare-shiny variant trick from Arekkz.

“Money is a very important factor when it comes to buying things for the Room of Requirement — conjurations, broomstick upgrades, potions. You need to have progressed far enough in the story to unlock the Room of Requirement, the vivarium, and a Nab-Sack. There's a method beyond just selling excess gear that gets you a lot of money and even rare shiny beasts you may not have known were in the game — using the vivarium beast spawn cycle and the Brood and Peck shop in Hogsmeade for premium resale.”

How to find the Phoenix

The Phoenix is the rarest beast in the game. Locked behind a postgame side quest, easy to miss because it's not flagged on the main map.

How to unlock

  1. Complete the main story first. The quest unlocks after the credits.
  2. Talk to Deek in the Room of Requirement. He gives you the side quest Phoenix Rising.
  3. Visit Poppy Sweeting — she has a tip about the Phoenix's nesting grounds.

Where to capture it

  1. The Phoenix's nest is in the southernmost reaches of the Highlands, near the cliff edge marked on Poppy's map.
  2. It only appears at night during specific weather (clear skies).
  3. Cast Disillusionment before approaching — it spooks easily.
  4. Use the Nab-Sack when it lands. Multiple attempts may be required.

After capture

  • Place in the Forbidden Forest Vivarium — Phoenix has special biome requirements.
  • It revives itself daily (in-game time) — never dies in your care.
  • Brushing it grants Phoenix Feather, a Trait material that applies to all gear types and is top-tier rare.

Bonus — rare shiny beast variants (Arekkz's trick)

Any beast you've placed in a vivarium has a chance to spawn as a rare shiny variant:

  1. Capture standard beasts with the Nab-Sack and put them in the matching vivarium.
  2. Sell the standard variant back to Brood and Peck shop in Hogsmeade — they often pay a premium and respawn shinier.
  3. Some shiny variants are vivarium-only — once you have a base of one species, the next caught (in the wild) has a chance to be shiny-coloured.

The rare-shiny variants are pure cosmetic but feed Hogwarts Legacy's beast-completion trophy and also a bunch of Loom gear cosmetics.

Trophy

  • Phoenix Rising — capture and care for the Phoenix.
  • Required for Hogwarts Legacy platinum.

If stuck: if Deek isn't giving you the quest, you haven't completed all 4 vivarium unlocks. Make sure all 4 vivariums are accessible first.
