How to beat Detlaff — Blood and Wine
Detlaff van der Eretein is the Blood and Wine endgame. He's a higher vampire — meaning oils, decoctions, and prep matter more than skill rotation.
Setup
- Vampire Oil on silver sword. Mandatory.
- Black Blood decoction — every bite reflects damage. Detlaff's monster form bites a lot.
- Petri's Philter for Igni — he's weak to fire.
- Mutagen: Euphoria if you have it — alchemy + sword damage stack is huge.
Phase 1 — Humanoid form
- Quen up.
- Counter his attacks — his humanoid form has clear telegraphs and parries cleanly. Counter → punish 2x → dodge.
- He summons bat clones at ~70% HP. Igni AoE clears them in one cast.
- Ground-pound dive is his big tell — sprint perpendicular, never away.
Phase 2 — Monster form
He transforms into a winged horror at 50% HP. This is the fight people lose.
- Don't try to dodge his charge. Use Quen Active Shield (from Sign skill tree) to absorb the first hit, then counterattack.
- He spawns 6 mini-vampire wisps that home you. Igni keeps them off — wide cone, sweep.
- Hit him during his shriek attack — he's locked in animation for ~3 seconds.
- Black Blood decoction reflects ~20% of his bite damage. With Euphoria, that ticks for serious chip damage.
Finisher
- QTE at low HP. Press counter, then attack in sequence.
The choice
After the fight, you choose kill Syanna or spare her. Kill = trigger one ending; spare = trigger another. Doesn't change the fight but matters for Vesemir's Triple Final. We have an endings guide.
If stuck: if Phase 2 keeps wiping you, you skipped Quen Active Shield in the skill tree — re-spec at a Place of Power and slot it. The fight is built around it.
