How Cloud's Punisher parry works
Cloud has a passive parry built into Punisher mode that almost no one uses correctly. Done right, it counters most blockable attacks for free — no ATB cost.
The core mechanic
- Tap triangle to enter Punisher mode. Cloud's stance shifts; basic attacks become slow but heavier.
- Hold L1 (guard). While holding guard in Punisher mode, Cloud will automatically parry any blockable incoming attack. You don't need to time the input — the stance does it.
- A successful parry lights Cloud up white and stuns the attacker briefly.
The advanced version (the one that wins fights)
Don't camp in guard. Weave Punisher into your combo:
- Run a normal square combo.
- At the tail of the combo, tap triangle to slip into Punisher.
- The brief Punisher stance window has the same auto-parry property — if you get hit during it, Cloud parries.
- Combo back into squares. The whole pattern flows: square × 3 → triangle (dance through enemy attack) → square × 3.
This lets Cloud trade hits with melee enemies and keeps your DPS uptime.
What it doesn't block
- Unblockable attacks — anything with a yellow triangle / caution icon next to the attack name. Dodge those, do not trust the parry.
- Ranged projectiles in Punisher mode. Punisher mode locks Cloud out of blocking ranged stuff. Switch out, or use the Counterfire synergy skill (L1 + Aerith / Barret) to deflect projectiles.
If stuck: if Cloud is taking damage anyway in Punisher mode, the attack you're eating is unblockable — look up at the attack name and check for the yellow caution icon.
