Precision Guard — timing window
Precision Guard isn't a Cloud-only thing. Every character can do a perfect-timed guard, and the game basically rewards you for trying.
Mechanic
- Tap L1 just as an enemy attack lands.
- Successful Precision Guard:
- Nullifies all damage (a normal hold-L1 only reduces it).
- Pushes the enemy's stagger bar up.
- Tiny ATB tick.
- Late or early L1 = normal block, partial damage.
The cheat code: Precision Defense materia
- Slot Precision Defense materia on a character → the perfect-guard window gets larger.
- Once it's leveled up the window becomes generous enough that you can practically read attacks in advance.
- Every character benefits — slot it on whoever you struggle to play (Aerith, Cait Sith).
When to use it vs dodge
- Blockable attacks (no caution icon) → Precision Guard. Free stagger contribution.
- Unblockable (yellow caution triangle) → dodge with circle. Guarding will eat the hit and knock you back.
The combat flow
For harder fights, the rhythm is: read the attack name → if no caution icon, time L1 → if caution icon, dodge. After a while you stop reading and just feel the difference.
If stuck: if your timed-L1 still takes damage, you're either pressing too early (very common) or the attack is unblockable. Slot Precision Defense materia — the wider window forgives bad timing.
