Pressure & Stagger explained
FF7 Rebirth's combat is balanced around stagger windows. Big damage doesn't come from raw DPS — it comes from staggering an enemy and then dumping into the bonus window.
The two states
- Pressured — orange bar fills faster. You don't deal bonus damage, but the stagger bar climbs much quicker.
- Staggered — bar full. Bonus-damage window opens (default ~160% multiplier; can go higher with skills).
How to pressure (varies per enemy)
- Use Assess materia on every new enemy — the yellow text tells you exactly how to pressure them.
- The most common pressure trigger is hitting them with their elemental weakness (Fire on a Bomb, Ice on a Drake, etc.).
- Some enemies pressure on:
- Counters / parries
- Specific abilities (e.g. interrupting their cast)
- Sustained ATB pressure
How to maximize stagger bonus damage
- Tifa — Unbridled Strength → Rise & Fall / Omnistrike during stagger raise the multiplier further.
- Aerith — Ray of Judgment raises stagger bonus.
- Tifa cancel — basic uppercut → animation-cancel by tapping L1 or dodge → repeat. Massive damage rack-up.
- Triangle uniques during stagger — fill ATB faster than basic attacks. Use the stagger window to issue commands, not auto-attack.
The Stop trick (level the Time materia first)
- Cast Stop on a staggered enemy.
- The stagger bar stops draining while Stop is active.
- Effectively doubles your stagger window. Game-changing on bosses.
If stuck: if you can't pressure a tough enemy at all, you skipped Assess. It's a free yellow materia — slot it, scan the boss, follow the on-screen instruction.
